SHERRI HOGAN BECOMES FIRST WOMAN IN 21 YEARS TO WIN AT LANCASTER
It was a historical night at Lancaster Raceway Park as Sherri Hogan of Bellwood, Ontario became only the second female in speedway history to win a feature race as she captured the win in the Signworks SST Sportsman on Saturday night. Hogan equals the accomplishment of Debby Druar (now Jankowiak) who won a Super Stock (then Pure Stock) race in September of 1984.
Hogan would start on the outside pole for the 20-lap feature alongside Ed Weber. She would quickly assume command of the field as she got the jump on Weber when the green flag waved.
Hogan would face a serious onslaught as she led with guys like Don Wylie and Eddie Murray putting up a serious challenge. In the final laps a five-car breakaway would decide the outcome of the race as Murray, Wylie, Bobby Holmes, and Justin Shepker were all bunched up behind her.
Hogan continued to run her own race and not deviate from the line she had been running all race long. She would cross the finish line first and receive a standing ovation from the crowd as she came out of the car in victory lane.
“I can’t believe I won at Lancaster,” said a shocked but excited Hogan during the post-race interview. It’s the second win of her career in open-wheeled Modifieds as the 30-year-old Hogan won at Holland Speedway in 2004.
Justin Shepker would be awarded second place after original second and third place finisher were disqualified in post-race inspection. Bobby Holmes, Ed Weber, and Mike Shields completed the SST top five. The race was the only feature of the night that went caution-free.
In the Advance Auto Parts Modifieds, Tom McGrath would claim his second victory of the season despite crossing the finish line second. Original race winner, Dave Wollaber, was disqualified during post-race tech inspection after reportedly being 150 lbs light when the car was weighed.
Sege Fidanza would get credit for second despite being involved in a four-car incident on the race’s first lap. Brett Scherrer would finish third, followed by Bill Mislin and Ron Williams. Point leader, Tim Mangus, was involved in an accident following a restart on lap 12 and would finish eleventh.
Nine days after winning his first career Bobcat of Buffalo Late Model feature, TJ Johnson would find himself back victory lane. Johnson inherited the lead with just four laps to go after Ron Nurmi and George Skora III got together while racing for first place. After Johnson too over he zoomed away from Joe Carbone in final laps for his second-straight win.
Sophomore driver, Mike Scott, won his second Probity Construction Super Stock feature of the season after passing Ed Lechner for the lead on lap three. Scott’s win keeps him in the hunt for the division title as he began the night just 53 points out the lead in fourth. Doug Evans finished second, while point leader Wayner Bernhard finished third.
Dave Johnson won the 20-lap Midseason Championship for the Glen Campbell Chevrolet Street Stocks. Johnson passed John Shurmatz with just six laps to go to bring home his second checkered flag of the year. Frank Batista was not far behind Johnson in the waning laps but finished second. Jeff Madill, Jim Offhaus, and Kyle Volk rounded out the top five.
Next week, August 6, there will be a high-flying Extreme Motocross Stunt Show as part of the regular racing program. The Modifieds have the night off as the TQ Midgets take their place on the race card. The action gets underway at 6:30 PM.
