JASON KLINE CAPTURES 50 LAP HOLLAND PRO MODIFIED SPECIAL
Holland, NY: Wheeling a car he had just picked up earlier in the week, Jason Kline, the racing high school coach from Holland, NY, scored his first win of the 2005 season, scoring the victory in the 50 lap special for the Pro Modifieds at Holland Speedway on Saturday evening.
In other Holland action, Tim Welshans of West Falls, NY used lapped traffic to make a final turn pass and notch his first win of the season in the Charger main, Brian Porebski of Hamburg, NY raced to his sixth win of the year in the Pro Four event, and "Big Dave" Zimmer earned his first of the year in the Figure 8 Car event.
The 40 lap NASCAR Late Model Pro Stock main was halted after just five laps when heavy rains hit the Speedway during a clean-up after a multi-car tangle in turn 3 and the event will be completed on August 27th.
After purchasing the Sportsman-style car from southern tier ace Tim Gullo earlier in the week, Jason Kline didn't know what to expect. Time constraints limited a Thursday practice session to only 20 laps, and due to a late afternoon rain shower, the Pro Modifieds were given but a single 10 lap practice session prior to the start of the Saturday racing program. However, when the 50 lap Pro Mod special went green, Kline discovered his S&L Logistics sponsored ride had some power under the bonnet, as he traded the lead with Steve Hoxie early in the going before assuming the lead for good after a lap 14 re-start.
Hoxie and Dave Hannahs kept things close with Kline, as that trio broke away from the rest of the field in a race that went caution-free for the final 37 circuits. Hannahs lost the handle on his ride with just 12 to go, leaving Kline and Hoxie to settle the issue between themselves. Hoxie made a serious run on Kline, first working the low groove, then trying a last lap run on the high side, but Kline, who serves as the boys basketball and baseball coach at Holland High School, was able to prevail by a car length. Points leader Steve Kreitzbender worked his way back through the field following a pit stop during the lap 13 caution period to claim third.
Lapped traffic proved to be to Tim Welshans' benefit and was Marty Hughes' undoing in the 30 lap Charger main. Hughes grabbed the lead at the opening green and quickly opened up a large lead advantage. Welshans moved his Golf Cart Express/Bob's NY Deli Monte Carlo into second on lap 4, and proceeded to slowly work into the lead Hughes had opened up, but as the laps were winding down in the caution-free event, it looked as if Welshans was going to run out of time. However, fate intervened in the form of a trio of lapped cars on the final lap, as Hughes was caught up in a shuffle in traffic in turns 3 and 4 on that final circuit, and Welshans found a lane opening up on the extreme inside. Welshans dove to the bottom, and outsprinted Hughes to the line by less than half a car length for the win. Points leader Jerry Kosmowski finished a distant third.
Brian Slippy, borrowing father Bob's Nissan to compete after pre-race practice problems with his regular Mustang ride, raced by Dan Hutchinson for the top spot on lap 4 of the 25 lap Pro Four go, but Brian Porebski was on the move. Porebski motored his Stadium Collision/Tom's Performance/Julicher Motorsports Nissan to the inside of Slippy on the 14th circuit, and after four laps of side-by-side racing, worked into the lead on the 18th lap. Porebski then survived a re-start challenge from Slippy with just three to go to roll on to the win. Slippy crossed the line in second, with Damian Fisher making a late race charge to grab third.
"Big Dave" Zimmer recovered from "x" collisions over the last two weeks to record the win in the 12 lap Figure 8 Car event. Zimmer raced by Bill Lutz for the lead on the first lap, then kept a challenging Wayne Fisher at bay on a restart with two to go for the win. Fisher placed second, with James Steins edging Sharon Hughes for third.
News and Notes - John Barber hopped aboard the former Jason Kline Pro Mod to help the Kline team sort out some issues. Barber ran with the lead pack in the early going before departing with mechanical problems at the mid-point of the race. Former Charger champ Dave Wilson, Jr. made his Pro Modified debut in the former John Gast car. Dave, in his first open-wheeled start, dropped out of the event late in the going with some handling problems. Marty Hughes, Nick Schaefer, and Kim Marzec led the "home" Northern Yankees team in Spike TV Carpocalypse events at their home speedway. The Spike TV cameras will be at Holland over the next month recording additional competitions for this Fall's Carpocalypse series.
The NASCAR Sunoco Late Model Pro Stocks will be up twice at Holland Speedway on Saturday, August 27th, completing the rain-delayed event as well as competing in the regularly scheduled 40 lapper. The Pro Modifieds, Chargers, and Figure 8 Cars will be joined by the 8-cylinder strictly stock Challengers and ladies-only Queen Bees on the program, as well the special "to be announced" Spike TV Carpocalypse events. Spectator gates will open at 5:15 pm, with racing getting underway at 7:15 pm.
