SPENCER SPEEDWAY MALL SHOW IS A HUGE SUCCESS

GREECE, NY: The New York based “Cars and Stars” of NASCAR were on hand this past weekend for their first annual show at “The Mall at Greece Ridge”.

“We were just so fortunate to have Dan (Hall) set this show up for us this year,” stated promoter John White. “It’s just great to see all of our cars looking so good.”

Twenty five cars were on hand starting on Thursday, April 24, to be viewed by the public. They included the NASCAR Modifieds, SST Modifieds, Street Stocks and Super Sixes. From the Saturday night NHRA drag crowd at least six dragsters were on hand, representing different classes. A driver interview session was held on Saturday, April 26, the final day of the show.

Also on show was the Don Pratt “Memorial” #62 car. This car will be driven in the SST division by Daryl Lewis Sr. throughout the summer. Pratt, who passed away in an accident at the 1989 Race of Champions in Pocono, had one recorded victory at Spencer in 1986. He also won twice at the closed Shangri-La (named Tioga Motorsports Park when it stopped racing in 2005) Speedway and once at the Lancaster Speedway (now named Dunn Tire Raceway Park).

Spencer photographer Ron Rigby will be posting pictures from the mall show on the Spencer Speedway website, www.spencerspeedway.org.

Spencer Speedway will celebrate their 54th year of hosting auto racing starting their 2008 season with a “Test and Tune” session on Friday, May 9 starting at 5:30 p.m. Pit gates will be opening around 3:30 p.m. that afternoon, to allow all of the racers and teams a chance to complete the correct NASCAR paperwork. Testing will begin at 5:30 and continue until dusk.

The racing season kicks off Friday, May 16, starting at 7:30 p.m. , with a Whelen All American Racing Night featuring a special 50-lap NASCAR Modified special. The weekly cars will also be on hand, including the SST Modifieds, Street Stocks and Super Sixes. The expected Mod Lite division, new for 2008, will now be running specials at Spencer Speedway until the division has enough cars to warrant weekly billing.

Last year Mike Leaty, 19.70 seconds (91.371 mph), set fast time during the annual “Test and Tune” session. This year Leaty, who claimed the 2007 NASCAR Modified Track title at Spencer, will be returning with US Army sponsorship. Bill Hebing, 21.51 seconds (83.682 mph), topped the SST division’s times at last season’s Test and Tune session.

Spencer Speedway is a flat half-mile asphalt oval, located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national Whelen All American Series championship. On Saturdays the track hosts NHRA drag racing action.
